Narendra Modi, autocrat?

A spectre haunts India. The great fear of the intellectual and political class in Delhi today is that Narendra Modi will become the Prime Minister of India. Once that happens, the country’s slide towards authoritarianism will be a given. Minorities will be in danger and secularism—that totem of Indian ideology—will be uprooted for good. These fears—and let us accept them for a moment—are founded on a mistaken notion of democracy that is uniquely Indian.
