The rise of Modi 2.0

In many senses, Narendra Modi's spectacular victory in Gujarat yesterday was the most impressive of his three electoral triumphs in the state. In 2002 and 2007, religious polarisation and the issues of terrorism and encounter killings gave rise to emotional responses. Modi won the mandate but, especially in 2002, there were disturbing implications as to the campaign and the verdict. This time has been very different, and it would be churlish not to recognise that.
