Prisoners of the 1990s
I remember the sounds and smells of the 1990s reforms as if yesterday. As a business manager then, I can still smell the fear of loss of markets to imports and a feeling of inadequacy from the inability to retain younger managers migrating to multinationals for better pay and prospects. And the sense of discovery as high import duties on raw material came down to earth and opened new vistas. But above all, I still hear the rumble of the eight-digit harmonised code...
