Have we heard of any airline where passenger load has been rising, revenue is growing but losses are also going up in equal measure? This is a bizarre business model that the government of India patronises. Before the merger, the government made the country believe that the losses incurred by Air India (AI) and Indian Airlines (IA) stemmed from competition between the two airlines, that they could not survive on a standalone basis. The creation of a merged entity would help them consolidate and capture the world market.
