Time to save the Railways

The budget of Indian Railways for 2012-’13 is round the corner, but with hardly an expectation of a financial recovery. This great Indian enterprise has been faltering and stumbling, with none to hold its hand or to show it the way forward. Its finances are in the doldrums; its performance during the year shows no promise of a significant turnaround, and the future looks bleak and troubled. Its poor safety record has only lengthened the shadows.
