Roll of dishonour

In a survey in Nanded in the last week of September, the Maharashtra education ministry, with the help of the revenue department, found that there were two lakh bogus students in the district. Flummoxed, Education Minister Rajendra Darda ordered district collectors to conduct inspections in schools across the state on October 3, 4 and 5. The inspection threw up some startling figures. There are 26,00,000 ‘mysteriously absent' students in the state and hundreds of schools exist only on paper.
