With allies like these does Cong need an Opposition?

Elements of the Congress have been in office since 1947, and such longevity has not been accidental. They may have only fuzzy notions of the national interest or public welfare, but when it comes to party interest, they are masters of the game. Manmohan Singh was not made the PM for his expertise in economics, but because he could be relied upon — as a bureaucrat — to be responsive to his political "remote control". Also, he did not have followers, even in Punjab, his only possible constituency being one that seldom votes, the middle-aged middle class.
