As visitors to a country, we don’t often notice the impact of tax policy on architecture. Amsterdam is a case in point, with narrow staircases in houses and hooks above windows. Since property taxes were based on frontage of houses, those were narrow and so were staircases. Furniture could not be dragged up narrow staircases. Hence, furniture was lifted up through windows, which explains the hooks.
