Reverse migration back to the farms?
The first eight years under the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), 2004-05 to 2011-12, saw an unprecedented shrinkage in India’s agricultural labour force — from 268 to 231 million. This happened primarily because annual growth averaged 8.3 per cent in this period. High growth helped create an estimated 52 million new jobs outside of agriculture, absorbing more people than the 37 million who exited farms. It led to a virtuous cycle.
