Helping our migrant labour

The idea of remitting money back home probably never occurred to India's first migrants — the indentured labour that travelled to Mauritius, Fiji and the West Indies in the mid-1800s. Those who did manage to return to India — after 10 years of hard work under extremely tough conditions — considered themselves lucky if they managed to bring back a few rupees as savings.
