Soothsayers, naysayers and ostriches

It’s been a week since the four Assembly election results in northern India and the decks are now clearing for the big Lok Sabha contest of April-May 2014. The key question is: where does Narendra Modi stand? There are those who feel he has emerged much stronger and is now a compelling favourite to win in 2014. Others argue that the state elections don’t prove much and there is no evidence of a “Modi wave” or that Mr Modi will win the Bharatiya Janata Party enough parliamentary seats to ensure he becomes Prime Minister.
