Few will doubt the agility India has shown in refashioning its Afghanistan policy since the Istanbul summit of January 2010. India’s exclusion from that conference drove home the unkind truth that its unqualified opposition to talks with the Taliban as part of the peace process in Afghanistan was likely to leave it high and dry in a region where it has invested a lot of time, money and emotions to develop healthy neighbourly ties.
