Open up marketing of fuels, not just pricing
The government has ruled out a one-time price increase for diesel and said it would persist with the ongoing gradual increase of 50 paise a litre per month. There could be a case for raising the monthly increase to Rs 1 a litre. But otherwise, it would be unrealistic to expect the poll bound government to develop courage it has not shownall these years and rile, with a sharp rise in the price of diesel, farmers, transporters, ordinary commuters and small-town residents in large tracts of north India who rely on diesel generators for their power supply.
