Mystery: Trade unions' strength is thrice the organised sector workforce

The number of workers in the country's formal sector may just be 2.9 crore but trade unions that represent them seem to have ballooned more than three times with a reported membership of more than 9.3 crore, according to data submitted to the labour ministry. While union leaders sought to explain the mystery by claiming they had also enlisted unorganised sector workers, government officials who have to verify the numbers are not so convinced.
