Why growth matters

The most recent poverty figures show that the number of people below the poverty line was down to 269 million or 21.9% in 2011-12, which is just about a fifth of the population. This 15.3 percentage point decline in poverty rates over the seven-year period from 2003-04, is remarkable given that the decline was 8.1 percentage points in the previous 11 years.
