India’s stalled highway projects

Recently, the finance ministry accepted a proposal by the ministry of road transport and highways to streamline the road projects approval process. The step is aimed at speeding the bureaucratic steeplechase that project proposals have to overcome before bids can be sought from private contractors. This development should be seen in light of the fact that only 1,010km of the targeted 9,500km of road projects have been approved in the fiscal year up to March.
