Health care closer home
On March 19, the parliamentary standing committee on health, which should champion the cause of millions of people deprived of healthcare in India, chose to support the cause of the Indian Medical Association, a trade union of doctors. The committee released a report that "rejected" the Union health ministry's plan to create a cadre of mid-level practitioners, known as community health officers (CHOs), to deliver primary healthcare much closer to village homes than the current three-tier system offers.
