Rebel lock on SAIL mine
Maoist threats have forced SAIL to shelve plans to tap a Bastar pocket rich in iron ore for its Bhilai steel plant and settle for a much smaller mine. The public sector giant has the lease for the Rowghat mines, which straddles the rebel-infested Kanker and Narayanpur districts, with estimated ore reserves of 511 million tonnes. The mines offered as an alternative have only a fraction of the ore at Rowghat.
