Telecom incumbents like Bharti, Vodafone and Idea can hold on to a 2.5 MHz sliver of spectrum in the 900 MHz band, for a price, in 2014. This decision by the empowered group of ministers is likely to reduce costs of refarming spectrum for the players and reduce the overall cost of shifting to the 1800 MHz frequency two years hence.
