The flood of contracts that Ajit Pawar cleared
In the three months leading to the Maharashtra Assembly elections in October 2009, tenders for irrigation projects worth Rs 6,143 crore were finalised, an amount several times higher than the region had ever seen in such a short period. These projects, and many others for which contracts had been awarded in the preceding years, are at the root of the scandal over which Ajit Pawar, then water resources minister, has now resigned as deputy chief minister.
