On her first day in the new job, Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa has dramatically raised the bar on subsidies—she plans to give 35 kg of free rice per month to around 19 lakh Antodaya Anna Yojana Scheme beneficiaries and 20 kg of free rice to 1.83 crore ration card holders.
