Italy's compromise deals with the families of killed fishermen and the lone eye-witness aboard the fishing vessel to bail out the arrested naval guards ran aground on Monday with the Supreme Court terming the agreement illegal and "a direct challenge to the Indian legal process". The Kerala government took a cue from the court's observations, which came during the hearing on a petition seeking release of Italian merchant vessel Enrica Lexie, and declared that it would challenge the legality of the Italian government's agreement with the kin of victims and the eye-witness.
