Picking the next head of state to give a headache

Rest assured, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi cannot afford to once again handpick a relative non-entity and get her or him elected as the President of India this summer. Tuesday's humiliating defeat of the Congress in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Goa has ensured as much. The best bet for the UPA government now is to chant the consensus mantra, take the Opposition into confidence and nominate a person of eminence agreeable to all sides for being elected to the top office.
