The 2011 Assembly election in Tamil Nadu stands out for several reasons, some of them heartening, others deeply disturbing. The record turnout of 77.8 per cent, which beats the 76.57 per cent of the landmark 1967 election when the Congress was voted out for the first time, came on the back of commendable efforts by the Election Commission of India to ensure comprehensive coverage of voters in the photo electoral rolls.
