Where is Mamata headed?

Tuesday morning's The Straits Times (Singapore) carried an edit page article titled “Thailand's troubles show democracy's shaky future” which, among other things, argued that the “modernisation theory” of the Cold War days — which postulated that “middle and other aspiring classes created by industrial capitalism would result in accountable and democratic governments” — no longer looks sensible and is headed for the “trash heap of history”.
