The case for online freedom

Google, Facebook, Yahoo and other websites may face a criminal trial in India for hosting “objectionable” content. While the case is in a subordinate court and the companies have already moved the Delhi high court, the possibility of a trial is real. The questions of law involved in the case are complex. A court will need to apply its mind on whether or not any of the content being contested is indeed defamatory, obscene or capable of inciting religious hatred.
