India’s missing technocrats

On Wednesday, the Kerala government announced that E. Sreedharan had agreed to lead the 29km-long Kochi Metro Rail project. It is hoped that the transportation system can alleviate the traffic crunch currently plaguing Kochi. Chief minister Oommen Chandy told reporters that Sreedharan had come on board as an adviser and that the state now hoped to appoint him as chairman of the project with the Union government’s blessing.
