Pragmatism could help

One of the many images that stays with me is of Prince Charles and Chairman Jiang Zemin at the Hong Kong handover in 1997. The heir to Britain’s throne walked up to the podium, groped inside his jacket for his speech, unfolded it, read it out, then folded the pages and put them back in his pocket before returning to his seat.
