Around the world, during election campaigns, most politicians make extravagant promises to the voters of a rosy, prosperous and safe future if they and their political party are elected and come to power. India, a thriving democracy, is no exception. However, with the passage of time, India’s national and regional political parties have evolved a practice of extreme and unsustainable competitive populism, which is gradually, but inexorably, driving the country towards a financial and political abyss.
