Liberation and its discontents

Ironically, Goa’s 50th anniversary of the end of Portuguese colonial rule came in a year where the country’s smallest state has been hit by all kinds of ugly controversies — from national attention finally being paid to the mining ravaging its interiors to public protests over urbanisation and planning, and various political tangles. While the end of four-and-half centuries of colonial rule deserves celebration, it is tempered with a note of cynicism about the situation Goa now finds itself in.
