Maverick who could have been PM is now Pawar-less

Ahead of the 2009 general elections, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar was being touted as a prime ministerial candidate. But, two years down the line the Maharashtra strongman cut a sorry figure as he celebrated his 71st birthday on Monday. Forget blood donation camps or cycle rallies from Mumbai to Pune that used to mark Pawar's birthdays, there wasn't even a birthday cake.
