Eye on UP polls, SP threatens to withdraw support to UPA govt

Even as the Congress is making all efforts to strengthen its position by joining hands with Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh ahead of the crucial Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections next year, it has some reasons for discomfort as well. The Samajwadi Party (SP) is learnt to have formally communicated its threat to withdraw support to the UPA. As a follow up, SP’s Rajya Sabha MP Ram Gopal Yadav not only shared the stage with social activist Anna Hazare here on Sunday but also described the UPA government as “vachan-bhangi” (failing to fulfil promise) and offered his party’s support to Team Anna on the Lokpal Bill in Parliament. “If I can use the words once used by Raj Narain, this (UPA) is a vachan-bhangi government. The SP will not pose any obstruction, but will assist in getting important non-negotiables, included in the Lokpal,” Yadav said.
