House back on feet, UPA on bended knee

Barely a fortnight after it announced its decision to allow 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail and signalled a shift from its state of policy freeze, the UPA government was today forced to step back and put this on hold. Hours after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee made the announcement to this effect in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh informed the cabinet in the evening that what Mukherjee had declared in parliament had his consent and support, and authorised him to carry out the consultation process with stakeholders to build a consensus on this issue.
