FDI: Rahul’s attack on Mulayam in UP leaves little elbow room for Pranab

Rahul Gandhi’s attacks on Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav during his recent roadshow in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh sunk any chances of the party backing the UPA government over FDI in retail. During a one-on-one luncheon meeting with Pranab Mukherjee, the SP — that bailed out the government in the trust vote over the Indo-US nuclear deal — made it clear that the Congress couldn’t expect to get the party’s support in the House after the way Mulayam had been attacked. The meeting came a day ahead of the Cabinet decision on FDI in retail and was meant to break the Parliament logjam over demands for an adjournment motion on black money and price rise.
