Govt offers holdback, Oppn wants rollback

Two days after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced that Pranab Mukherjee had assured her that the government had decided to put FDI in multi-brand retail on hold, the finance minister reached out to the Opposition parties today with the same proposal to break the deadlock in Parliament. Opposition parties, however, insisted on a rollback, not just a holdback, of the decision. Official sources said there was “no question” of rolling back the Cabinet decision — although the government was prepared to put it in abeyance. The government would spell out its stance at an all-party meeting on Wednesday morning, the sources said.
