‘Loyalist’ Sheila opposes Sonia’s dream Food Bill

The draft of National Food Security Bill 2011, the brainchild of Congress president Sonia Gandhi has hit a road block. Delhi has joined the chorus of Congress-ruled States Rajasthan and Maharashtra to oppose the draft of National Food Security Bill. The Sheila Dikshit Government has requested the Centre to implement its ‘cash transfer scheme’ of Public Distribution System (PDS) in lieu of PDS items which is yet to be approved by Government of India. Most importantly, the Dikshit Government feels that the bid to extend coverage of subsidised food grains to 75 per cent of the total population in rural areas and 50 per cent of urban areas under the existing PDS system was not viable as the present system was inefficient, and corruption-ridden.
