In the months since nurse Bhanwari Devi’s disappearance on September 1, Congress leader Mahipal Maderna seems to have squandered most of his family’s political clout in Rajasthan, which his father Parasram Maderna had built painstakingly over decades. With Mahipal having admitted to a relationship with Devi, it left the party facing a statewide backlash that forced it into in a cabinet reshuffle, besides creating a void in the state’s politics, particularly among the powerful Jat community.
