Sharing its borders with Haryana, Delhi and Uttarakhand, which are doing better economically, this region has been an agricultural powerhouse for the state with sugar providing a remunerative avenue to its farmers. Apart from cultivating wheat, paddy and sugar, it is also one of the country’s major potato producing regions. Industrial activity is higher here than in the other three regions, particularly in GB Nagar (Noida), Ghaziabad, Agra, Aligarh, Bulandshahr, and Meerut. And this is the region that has the Taj Mahal. The region has also benefited from the expansion of the National Capital Territory, which has not only fuelled a growth in real estate but also enabled rapid upgrades in infrstaructure. Demographically, it has substantial populations of the peasant-proprietor segment of the Jat community, Muslims, and a relatively aware Dalit community.
