When the AIADMK leader Dr J Jayalalithaa swept the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu in May and decimated the opposition DMK, much was expected from her. Everybody hoped that they would see a much mellower Amma, who would not indulge in midnight arrests like she did in her previous regime. But she also promised quick action against the guilty, particularly land grabbers. This issue is a particularly emotive one; and its party cadres running wild could have been one major reason why the DMK lost so badly. Jayalalithaa fulfilled her promise and set up a special police cell in every district of the state to look into land-grab complaints. As a result, DMK leaders and many former ministers and MLAs are filling the jails in the state.
