Press council an ineffective body

The continuation of Press Council of India (PCI), established as a statutory print journalism watchdog by an Act of Parliament in 1978, has come under serious question in the wake of its chairperson Justice Markandey Katju's recent remarks on the state of the media. Upset with Katju's comments, former Chief Justice of India J. S. Verma described the council as an "ineffective" body, which should be shut down if it fails to meet its mandate.
