Can good economics win votes?

When the BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi won his third mandate as chief minister of Gujarat last December , he claimed that his victory disproved the old truism of Indian politics that "good economics doesn't make good politics." In Gujarat, he said, "the people have shown that (they support) good economics and good governance."
