With urbanization, villages thinning out

India's rural population is getting concentrated in a narrow band of villages ranging in size from population of 2000 to 10,000. Nearly half of the rural population now lives in just 1.2 lakh villages. The remaining half lives in 4.8 lakh villages. This is the finding of Census 2011 as shown in village data released Tuesday.
