Coal: Scarcity amidst plenty

India needs to focus on harnessing its domestic coal reserves rather than rely on imports to meet its domestic coal requirement. To that end, it would be advised to expeditiously finalise a proposed policy for involving the private sector in mining Coal India Ltd’s coal blocks. Besides, the process of auctioning captive coal blocks to bulk coal users should be quickened.
