India’s job emergency needs more cities with real Mayors

In 1924 Jawaharlal Nehru was the Mayor of Allahabad, Vallabhbhai Patel of Ahmedabad, Chittaranjan Das of Calcutta and Rajendra Prasad of Patna.Despite the British circumscribing their powers, their consequential work is documented in the delightful letters written by Nehru on street lights, Patel on sanitation and garbage, and Prasad on education. Being mayors gave them the experience and credibility for larger political roles.
