Control and food inflation
Today’s food inflation is less about food grain, more about fruit and vegetables, eggs, fish and meat. Prices are subject to seasonal variations. And yes, India is the world’s largest, second-largest or third-largest producer of many agricultural products. But beyond seasonal variations, if prices increase, it means supply isn’t coping with demand. The answer doesn’t lie in banning agricultural exports from India, or preventing “exports” of potatoes from West Bengal.
