What of the quality of initial convictions?

The Supreme Court order removing, prospectively, the protection for sitting members of legislatures from disqualification on being convicted if they appeal against the conviction in a higher court deserves only a qualified welcome. There are three reasons for this. One, the verdict rests on technical rather than substantive grounds, namely, that the conditions for disqualification for contesting an election cannot be different from the grounds for disqualification of a sitting member.
