Food Bill: Ordinance to give 5 kg grain or cash in lieu

The government is all set to promulgate an ordinance to empower citizens with the right to food, after it failed to pass the proposed legislation during the budget session of Parliament. Seen as a potential vote-catcher for the Congress-led ruling coalition in the next general elections, the ordinance on the scheme, entailing an annual spend of Rs 23,000 crore, will come up for discussion in the Cabinet in a week, an official told ET.
