Decontrolling sugar, again

The golden rule of government is simple. Whenever a decision has to be avoided, establish a committee. If the number of committees is considered a proxy measure for not taking hard decisions, surely the sugar sector takes the cake. Last week, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh appointed a committee—to be led by chairman of the PM’s economic advisory council, C. Rangarajan—to look at “issues relating to the sugar sector”. Incidentally, Rangarajan had led another committee earlier on the subject.
