Security shouldn't derail aadhaar enrolment

The compromise hammered out between the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) and the home ministry - apportioning collecting biometric data on 600 million of India's 1.2 billion residents to each - looks mechanical and unimaginative. Nevertheless it's welcome if it can restart the Aadhaar process. The delay in thrashing out the dispute has been rather vexing, given the enthusiastic response of people who have voluntarily lined up in large numbers to have themselves scanned and enrolled. The differences within the government appear rather contrived, obfuscating yet another petty turf war between departments.
