NDA, small parties to be consulted for Prez post name: Gadkari -
Indore, May 2 - Against the backdrop of reports about fissures in the NDA over the name of the presidential candidate, BJP national president Nitin Gadkari today said that the name would be finalised only after consulting the NDA leaders and small parties. |
Left may not be averse to Ansari as Prez nominee -
New Delhi, May 1 - Left parties, which have been advocating "maximum consensus" to elect a new President, may not be averse to supporting a candidate like Vice President Hamid Ansari if Congress comes up with his name. The Left parties were holding informal discussions with some parties and favoured evolving a consensus on the name of a Presidential nominee, CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat told reporters here today.

JD-U snubs BJP for unilaterally announcing its stand on Presidential election -
New Delhi, May 1 - Indicating fissures in the NDA over the issue of Presidential election, the JD-U today snubbed the BJP for unilaterally announcing its stand on the issue. "Whatever Sushma Swaraj has said is the opinion of the BJP. This is not our party's view. The issue was not discussed in any NDA meeting. BJP has not discussed the issue with us," JD-U President Sharad Yadav told reporters here.

Differences in NDA over President candidate -
New Delhi, May 1 - Differences appeared to have cropped up in the NDA over the Presidential election with JD(U) saying the BJP's stand on the contest was not its view. "Whatever Sushma Swaraj has said is the opinion of the BJP. This is not our party's view," JD(U) President and NDA Convenor Sharad Yadav told reporters here.

Sonia to meet Mamata on Prez poll nominee either on May 3 or 4 -
New Delhi/Kolkata, April 30 - Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee will meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi later this week when the issue of Presidential poll candidate may come up for discussion. While Congress sources said the meeting between the two is billed for May 3, high-placed Trinamool sources quoted Mamata as saying that it is likely on May 4.

BJP to oppose Congress candidate for President -

BJP on Monday opposed Congress's bid for a consensus over the presidential elections, saying that it would not support any Congress candidate, but reached out to the non-UPA players for an understanding. "We will not accept any Congress candidate, including Pranab Mukherjee, for the president's post," leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said after emerging from a meeting with party chief Nitin Gadkari, L K Advani and her counterpart in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley.

The BJP has said a firm no to backing any Congressman for the post of President and said it could support someone of ‘high stature’ like APJ Abdul Kalam if there was consensus within the Opposition on his name and if he agreed to contest. The party said it had received ‘feelers’ from the Samajwadi Party in favour of Kalam, but there had been no formal proposal so far. |
